You are currently viewing Lip Balm – SKINCARE SECRETS

Today marks the end of my skincare series!  It’s been such fun to put together for you guys, and I’ve tried to include products from all price ranges where I can.  I know that a lot of people are not in a financial place to be purchasing higher end skincare right now.  I will be doing a post on affordable products that work soon too.  In the meantime, I thought I’d include lip balm in this series.  We’re now into the colder, drier months and a lot of us are suffering with dry, chapped lips.

This being said – please try and exfoliate your lips once a week, as this will help ANY of your lip products absorb and do their job much better.  You don’t even need to buy a fancy lip scrub, you can make one at home with sugar, honey and even a little olive oil!

Nuxe Rêve de Miel Honey Lip Balm

I’ve gone through 2 pots of this luscious honey lip balm now – and each pot lasts absolute ages!

The Nuxe lip balm is thick and rich, but as you apply it to your lips, it melts with the warmth of your skin.  It’s an incredible lip balm all year round but ESPECIALLY in the winter.  I love to apply this at night, just before bed, as I’ll wake up with my lips feeling nourished and soft.  I know that when I use this, I don’t have a problem with dry or chapped lips at all!

To be honest, I don’t battle with flaking or dry patches on my lips, but when it’s cold and/or dry I battle the most with my lips feeling tight and sore and red.  This is my absolute go to – in fact I need to repurchase as I recently finished my last pot!

I’ve also used this on my dry cuticles before and it’s helped like a dream.

Chapstick Total Hydration 3-in-1 Lip Balm*

My final product in the lip balm list is this goodie from Chapstick – who arrived in South Africa last year!

They have a great selection of products, including their OG cherry lip balm, but I always gravitate towards these extra special products like the Total Hydration line, and this Coconut Hydration balm.

The lip balm is just a regular wind up tube, but it smells like a beach vacation (just what we need to keep going in this lockdown), and leaves my lips insanely soft and nourished.  I’m almost finished this tube and I have a backup of the Vanilla Cream with CoQ10 – then I’ll have to repurchase!

By Terry Baume de Rose

This is, without a doubt, the BEST and most luxurious lip balm of all time.  BUT – it’s pricey.

I bought a bundle of luxury samples on Fashion Police and this teeny, tiny 3g jar was included.  To be quite honest, I bought the whole bundle just for this By Terry lip balm, as it had been on my wish list for more years than I can remember.  And, when the tiny sample is still in a beautiful glass jar, you know you’re looking at a very expensive product.

The texture of this balm is luxury in itself.  It’s melty, rich, creamy, delicious goodness.  To me, it has the consistency and smell of decadent melted Turkish delight.  You can feel from your first application that your lips are going to fall in love with it.  I loved how soothing and comforting it felt, and I started saving it as my travel lip balm – so I’d feel that extra bit pampered when I’m away.

The balm isn’t sticky at all, it goes on and feels buttery on your lips, but in a creamy way as opposed to a gloss.  However, it leaves your lips looking so plump and shiny that you don’t need to even wear lipstick or lipgloss!

If this wasn’t so insanely pricey (particularly right now in our current Covid-19 climate) I’d keep a jar on my night stand.  I wish every single birthday and Christmas for one of these to magically appear in my stocking – perhaps I need to write Santa a special letter this year!  If you want to splurge (on yourself or someone else), then head on over to Metropolitan Cosmetics, as they are the official SA stockists of By Terry products.

Lanolips Lemonaid

I’ve owned this for about 3 years now, but for about a year and a half it actually went missing.  I eventually found it in one of my handbags when I did a spring clean and was thrilled to bits!

Lanolips uses ultra medical graid lanolin, which is colourless, odourless and not even the slightest bit sticky (it’s buttery and smooth actually), but it mimics skin oils to restore lost moisture.  The brand has many different products that are rich in lanolin, but this one contains organic lemon oil as well, to help gently exfoliate the lips while also deeply moisturising them.  Plus, it smells like sweet lemons, one of my favourite smells ever!

This is my current lip balm for using just before bed – and let me tell you, my lips have never be happier.

We sadly don’t get the Lanolips brand here in South Africa, this was brought over for me by some family friends, however it is available on Cult Beauty (when we are eventually able to place international online orders again).

KiKi Beauty Rose Wax Lip Balm*

This is like a locally made, much glossier version of the By Terry lip balm.  It’s in a tube and is more like a lip gloss with skincare properties than a lip balm to be honest.

It’s so gorgeously glossy that I often pack just this when I go away, as I use it as my lip balm and a makeup product for my lips too.  It’s luscious used in a thick layer before bed as an overnight mask, and I love using a tiny amount on my ring finger and dabbing it gently on tops of my cheekbones as a highlight topper to help my highlighter pop even more!

Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer*

Here’s a tinted option for those of you who don’t want just a plain old lip balm!

These Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmers are beautiful!  They’re 100% natural and packed with fruit oils, shea butter, vitamin E, sunflower oil, beeswax and there’s even a little peppermint oil in there, which leave you feeling so fresh.  All of this, plus you have a wide selection on colours, as they’re tinted and nicely so.

I own the shade Cherry, which is just a beautiful red.  I’ve often tried out tinted lip balms and found that while they add a nice splash of colour, they’re not particularly hydrating – this one is both.

Pixi On-The-Glow*

This offering from Pixi is a multi tasker of note.

This is basically a travel moisturiser that can be used on lips, face, body, hair.  I’ve used it on my lips (amazing), cuticles and dry elbows (fab and fuss free) and I’ve even applied it to my face on the areas where my skin gets tight around my nose and chin (so easy and really helps comfort and moisturise the skin).

Would HIGHLY recommend this for people who travel a lot, especially internationally.

Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil

My dear friend Cam from Jane Wonder actually gifted me this lip oil just before my wedding.  I’d had it on my wishlist for AGES and it really lived up to the hype!

The oil is like a hug for dry lips, and the doe foot applicator is so big and soft that just applying it is an addictive feeling.

Absolutely gorgeous, and it comes in a variety of colours (although it’s a very subtle tint) and flavours – this was the Honey one, but I would love to try the Honey Glam that has golden shimmer in!

Mario Badescu Lip Balm*

I received this towards the end of last year, and only really got into it just before lockdown began, as I have so many damn open lip balms in my collection.

Needless to say, I’m obsessed, as I am with all things from the brand.  It smells delicious, it isn’t greasy or sticky at all, and leaves my lips happy as can be.  It may look like a very simple squeeze tube of lip balm, but it’s so much more than that.  It’s comfort in a tube, a blend of butters and oils that will leave lips pampered and soft.
