January Favourites 2019

Who else can’t quite wrap their head around the fact that the first month of the year is already over?  I still feel like Christmas just came and FLEW past, and now we’re already heading into February!?  It actually took me some time to sort through what I’d been using and loving throughout this past month, as I couldn’t quite understand that it was time for my January favourites post!

First up

I hadn’t even considered this product for my favourites, as I’ve been ranting and raving about it for the last couple of months on social media, and it made it onto my Best of Skincare 2018 post.  I figured that you’d all be sick and tired of hearing about it!  Then I sat down to write this post, and to be very honest I’d be lying to myself if I DIDN’T include this product.

Elizabeth Arden Retinol Ceramide Capsules (R565 for 30 capsules/R965 for 60 capsules)*

I’m going to call this my top find of 2018 actually.  That’s how much I love these pretty pink capsules.

I posted when I’d used them for about a week saying how I loved the feel of the serum in the capsules, and that my skin was looking better already.  Then, come holiday season I decided to try and de-clutter a bit, and started trying to finish up my other retinol products.  I’d been POWERING through the capsules and needed to slow down!

I posted an updated review on Instagram a couple of weeks ago, saying that I noticed a significant difference in my skin after using my other retinols.  It would be tight, flakey and pink.  Not comfortable at all, even though I’d gradually see an improvement in the texture of my skin and the fine lines.  After having enough of the side effects, I went back to using my Elizabeth Arden capsules, and POW!  No flakiness, no tightness the following morning and my skin wasn’t pink at all – in fact, it was smooth, even toned and plump, and it felt so comfortable and hydrated too.  Each time I use these, the morning after my skin just looks better and better.

I get the maximum benefits out of these capsules, with NO side effects at all, and these will definitely be a repurchase when my bottle is finished.  Well done Elizabeth Arden, well done.

Mario Badescu Enzyme Cleansing Gel (R499 for 236ml)*

I’ve been using this face cleanser for a couple of months now, and am so in love with it.  I keep it in my shower, and use it every single morning as my morning cleanse, and some nights too, as my second cleanse when I jump into the shower.

I love that it doesn’t leave my skin feeling squeaky-clean – it doesn’t foam, it’s more of a rich gel – and yet my skin is cleansed of dirt, makeup, oil and dead skin cells with the gentle fruit enzymes in the cleanser.  It smells like a fruit smoothie (absolutely delicious) and it doesn’t irritate my skin or over-exfoliate it.

I have to say, this is my best part of the morning, especially after gym, because I know it really gets rid of any sweat or bacteria after I’ve worked out.

Clinique Dramatically Different Hydrating Jelly (R295 for 50ml/R570 for 125ml)

I received this small deluxe sample tube with an online order I placed on the Clinique website late last year.  This made me super excited – I’d been really keen to try the jelly out, but had a few other products to finish up first before I made a purchase.

I took this with me to Zimbabwe (you can read about my trip HERE), and in the sticky and sweltering heat it was the best possible choice for my skin.

The jelly is super hydrating, yet it feels like water on the skin.  What I really liked though was the anti-pollution aspect (it locks in the moisture but filters out any pollution through Clean Shield Technology™) and that it doesn’t just temporarily provide hydration, but instead helps to strengthen your skin’s moisture barrier.

This is the perfect hydrating moisturiser for oily skinned or combo folk, but in hot weather I see it being fabulous for anyone!

Small claw clips (similar here at Clicks at R19.99 for 4)

At the end of October, my hair stylist said that there was a little damage in my hair – typically where I’d be tying it up with a hair band.  She suggested I perhaps use some little claw clips to clip my hair in a bun on top of my head, and see if it improved the condition.

Let’s just say, she’s noticed a big difference!  I bought a few different styles and sizes, but these little ones that I found in Dischem have been my favourite.  I keep some in my handbag, so if the weather is hot I can just clip it up, and at night I wind a soft bun on top of my head and clip it at the front with one of these.  It doesn’t bother me while I sleep (the placing of the clip is key, so it can’t be at the back on on the sides) and in fact I’ve even been having less tension headaches too.

I’m now on the hunt for cute clips like these, so if you spot any, let me know!

Matrix Total Results Miracle Treat 12 (R215 for 125ml)

Another find from my hair stylist, I needed to buy a new heat protectant and she suggested this product.  It’s a multi-use treatment that detangles, smoothes and protects against humidity and heat-styling.

My usual leave-in conditioner has been reformulated and no longer detangles my hair as nicely, but this stuff works wonders!  I spritz some into my hands, run it through my hair and brush.  It’s quite a thick formula, yet I can still get away with using a smaller amount on second or third day hair when I want to heat style – and I have super fine hair, so this truly is a miracle!

I love that I can use one product for everything post-washing, and so far so good with this treatment.

Lush Cinders Shower Gel (Christmas limited edition collection)

I bought this when the Christmas collection was in stock online, and so wish I’d been able to buy a bigger bottle (they were sold out).  I love the scent of cinnamon, and this smells like those red fireball sweeties!

It’s full of orange and almond oil, maple syrup, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and pumpkin seed oil, making it a warm, comforting fragrance for the cooler months.  Even though we’re FAR from the chilly weather here in Durban, I’ve nevertheless been using this shower gel, and I’m in love with it.  I love the delicious smell, and even though my intention had been to put it away for winter, I just couldn’t resist.  I find this a common thing with Lush products – I can’t save them up for a ‘rainy day’, I always want to use them up immediately!

Although this is no longer available, I have linked to the Lush shower gel page for you above – I have no doubt in my mind that everyone can find something they’d love!  You can also check out their brand-spanking new Shower Bombs HERE.  I used the Sleepy* one last night and it was amazing – indulgent, beautifully fragranced and I truly got out of the shower feeling relaxed and ready for bed.

Maybelline Brow Precise Fiber Filler (R119.95)*

Another product from my 2018 favourites, this brow mascara made it onto my Best of Makeup post.

After a bit of playing around with the uniquely shaped applicator, I finally got the hang of using this as my only brow product most days of the week.  The trick is wiping off excess product and going in at the middle of your brow towards the ends first, so that most of the product is applied there. I use the bristles for this part, and then the tip of the applicator to shape the tail of my brow.  Finally I apply to the front of my brows, when there is less product left.

I’m so impressed with how well this builds up the arch of my brow, how it doesn’t budge until you remove it, and how quick and effortless it can be.

I’ve done a short video tutorial on how to use this, you can find it on my Tutorials highlight on my Instagram page HERE.

MAC Creme In Your Coffee Cremesheen Lipstick (R250)

I blame this purchase ENTIRELY on Rachael from Top Knotch (now known as Sincerely Blonde).  After seeing the colour on her, it flew to the top of my lipstick wishlist, and I eventually purchased it (along with Ruby Woo, another lust product) during Black Friday.

The shade is listed as a creamy mid-tone pink brown, and it’s true to that.  It’s more of a brown than a pink, but it’s just beautiful.

I wore this lipstick pretty much non-stop over the festive season, as it’s perfect for day and night.  The cremesheen formula is lovely and hydrating too, and for a more glossy lipstick it lasts pretty dang well.

See how pigmented and glossy that swatch is?  Looks even better on the lips!

By Terry Lash Expert Twist Brush Mascara (R490)*

I have so many of the By Terry products on my wishlist, especially after watching videos from my favourite British YouTubers.  I managed to snag a deluxe sample of the Baume de Rose (the most luxurious, rich and all-round amazing lip balm you’ll ever use in your life) in a set last year, and since then the lust for the brand has grown even more.

When Metropolitan Cosmetics sent me this gorgeous, sleek mascara to try out, I was thrilled.  I love trying out new mascaras, especially ones with a new angle.  The formula of this mascara is nourishing and volumising, and it’s pitch black, but it’s the brush that holds all the magic in my eyes, just take a look at the images below: –

Step one helps to lengthen and curl your lashes, and I find it superb for lower lashes too as it’s very small and fine.  I really do notice the added definition and length in this step.  It would be fantastic to only use this brush for no-makeup makeup days, or if you’re purely looking for length and definition.

You very gently turn the top of the wand, and the brush curls around to Step 2 – for volume and thickness.  This is where the plumped up and voluminous lashes come from, and this is my personal favourite setting on the wand.  I’ve used only this step when in a rush, but if you want that maximum volume look that is full, yet still defined, using both makes the world of difference.

I still need to take some ‘on the eye’ shots of this mascara, but I do have lash extensions on at the moment.  For the first month of this mascara’s life, the formula was very ‘wet’ too, so if that’s your thing then this is definitely for you.  It stays this way for quite some time, so an added bonus is that it doesn’t dry out super fast, but once it has thickened up and isn’t as wet, it’s absolute perfection, and everything I look for in a mascara.

Aromadough Aromatherapy Stress Ball in Calm (R80)

I was given this as a gift from one of my friends, and it was so thoughtful – you know how friends just pay attention to things you say in passing, and make a mental note of it?  She knew I battled with anxiety, so when she saw this, she bought one for me!

It’s basically a small tub of bright teal-coloured play dough.  Packed into the play dough are Lavender, Lemongrass and Neroli essential oils to help calm anxiety and provide mental clarity. I’ve picked up this play dough at night just to help calm me and help me wind down for bed, and I now carry it in my handbag.  Whenever I start feeling stressed or anxious, I just whip it out and play with it for a little.  It’s also filled with coconut oil, cocoa butter and beeswax, so your hands are left feeling soft afterwards too.

And, just as I was getting into this, The Beautiful Store (one of my favourite spots for online shopping) started stocking them!  They stock a variety of different blends for adults, teenagers and little ones, so check them out.  Totally worth a look in if essential oils are your thing, or if you’re looking for alternative treatments for different ailments.

And that’s a wrap for my first favourites post of 2019!

What were your favourites for the month of January?

*This product was sent to me as a gift/for review purposes.  This does not skew my review whatsoever, and my opinion is honest and my own.

I really want to try the Matrix hair spray once I finish my current heat protectant. I need something to detangle my daughter’s hair, so this seems like a great dual purpose sort of product.

It’s fantastic. Detangles and protects against heat. Plus defrizzes and smooths!
