High tea is probably my favourite kind of meal. It involves finger foods, cakes, pastries and warm drinks. I think I’d probably ask for a full high tea as my last meal! I’d go out with a real bang, stuffed to the brim with finger sandwiches, cakes and tea. Yummo!
I recently tried out the high tea served at the Hilton Hotel in Durban, and took my Mom along for an afternoon of indulgent nibbles. To be quite honest, I didn’t even know that the hotel served a high tea, but it takes place every Saturday from 14:00-17:00 in their Coral Lounge.
We were greeted by the friendly staff, and taken to our reserved table, complete with a handwritten card welcoming us, and sweet berry iced tea in champagne glasses. There were even little wrapped brownies resting at each setting.
Hot drinks are included in the R270 high tea price per person, and we both decided on a chai latte. I adore them, and the Hilton offers some of the best tasting chai lattes I’ve tried. Once we’d placed our order, it was time to peruse the table and see what deliciousness was on offer.

And here are some of the sweet options:
It’s also worth noting that I didn’t get a picture of the creme brulee. You see little ramekins of custard on the table, and they sprinkle sugar on top and create your sugar crust on request! You can check out my Food highlight on Instagram, and see the video of this being done (and also the super delicious one of me dunking a strawberry in the chocolate fountain).
In between tasting the savoury and sweet goodies, a waiter actually came along with a wooden board covered in ramekins and baskets of food. We both kind of stared at him in confusion, and he chuckled to himself and explained that this was the hot finger food, and each table received it.
We had no idea that there was MORE food, and to be quite honest this was far too much food for two ladies. We could have easily nibbled on this board alone, and still had some left over! I worry about waste, and feel that it should be portioned out for the number of guests at a table. We could have had little ramekins with one or two of each item per person, as opposed to a basket filled with them. It was an incredibly generous serving and each snack was scrumptious, but we just couldn’t eat everything.
Is it worth it?
Most definitely! The Hilton Durban High Tea is a great option for baby showers, bridal showers and catching up with friends. At R270 pp, you truly get your money’s worth and then some, and the quality of the food is fantastic. You have so much variety that there is bound to be something for everyone, and you’ll be spoilt for choice.

I haven’t tried a high tea before but they sound quite lovely, and those brownies look delicious.

It was so lovely! I actually didn’t have breakfast or lunch, but not intentionally (time just got away with me), so this was even better because I was so hungry! x
This looks so delicious! I love high teas as well. I have not tried the one at Hilton but it sure looks divine.

It was amazing, and the value for money is outstanding. Such a great treat to take a friend there for a birthday, or Mum for mother’s day.
