Married To A Blogger – He Says

Note from Siobhan

Today marks an important date – Hubby’s first guest post on the blog!  I asked him a while back if he’d like to write a post, and he was much more eager than I anticipated.  He threw himself into this task with such determination, that I’ve now created a whole category for him, and I’m sure you’ll appreciate more frequents posts on things from his point of view in the future.

So, without further ado, please read on!

My name is Nick

and I am a blogger’s husband – you may recognise me!  I am the blurry thing behind the plates of food or cocktails seen on my wife’s blog, often referred to as the hubby.  This will be my first contribution to the weird and wonderful world of blogging.

When I met my wife, I had little to no idea what a blog was, and boy did I have a thing or two to learn!  After two years of my experiences with my blogger wife, I felt it necessary to share some of my knowledge and experiences with others out there, a survival guide if you will.

Firstly, it is awesome being married to a blogger!  However, beneath the glossy veneer of press drops, food, movies and all the other neat stuff, there are a few important things you need to know as the husband.

Blogging is A LOT of work.  Your significant other will spend seemingly endless amounts of time behind either a computer screen or a cell phone… Remain calm, she has not forgotten about you!  Trust me, it is worth your while to let her clatter away on her keyboard for as long as she wants.

Get used to being a plus one… This is not as bad as it seems. As a born and brewed South African man, it was difficult not to be the one striding into the door at an event, and not giving my surname to the person at the door.  I had to learn to let my wife just take charge – this is her turf.  The events are still really fun!  More often than not, I will meet other plus ones and end up having an awesome time whilst our partners photograph and hash tag their way through the night.

Don’t touch your food…!  Going to a restaurant will never be the same again.  EVERYTHING gets photographed!  The menus, table settings, the list goes on and on, but the golden rule: DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TOUCH YOUR FOOD OR DRINK.  I still get scolded from time to time with a “Gee thanks you’ve ruined the photo”.  Always keep in mind that this whole experience will be documented, tagged and colour-corrected before being thrown out into the world for all to see.

Subscribe to her blog…  This is one of the most important things to do!  Your other halves put a great deal of effort into their blogs, so pay attention!  As a bonus, birthdays, Christmas and other important dates are a breeze these days, I get supplied with a WISH LIST!

Occasionally I help out with the photos – that’s my hand!

Apparently empty bottles are important…  Gone are the days when one would throw away empty toiletries – these containers MUST be kept!  As I have discovered, there is an entire community who need to know that these were indeed great, hence the reason they are empty.  It is common place to find rather large bags of empty containers in my bedroom occupying space, which makes my OCD hit tilt.  Do not argue, just deal!

You will learn new words and phrases… I have never been a very trendy man to be fair, or very involved with women’s preparatory work before allowing the rest of the world to see them.  You will unwittingly become quite familiar with certain things.  I have learned what “Hitting Pan” means (more empty containers), as well as the importance of a “BB cream”.  So, make sure that you mention your partner’s eyebrows are “On Fleek” before leaving the house.

I often have a second camera, and help out with photos for reviews – this is one of mine.

I am still exploring this strange and unfamiliar landscape that is blogging, and much like studying the frozen caveman, I will continue my anthropological study of the species that is ‘blogger’.  Who knows, maybe in a few months you may see this technologically-impaired Neanderthal has a twitter account… #whoknows
