Have you visited Anthonij Rupert Wyne before?Β  It was one of our last stops on a day filled with wine tasting – and the estate is BEAUTIFUL!

ANTHONIJ RUPERT WYNE

We arrived on a beautiful, sunny afternoon in August, to enjoy a tasting of their Cape Of Good Hope range.Β  The Cape Of Good Hope range uses grapes from unique sites and older vines.Β  The grapes come from a variety of places, such as Elandskloof, Arbeidsend, Krommevalley, Swartland and Somerset West.Β  Through Johann Rupert’s search for South African vineyards that were older than 35 years, this terroir specific range of delicious wines was born.

It was such a treat to taste such historically-rich wines, and with much excitement we entered the estate.Β  We were offered a delicious glass of L’Ormarins Brut Classique RosΓ©, and while waiting to be led to our table, we browsed the shop in the main house.Β  If you’re looking for beautiful goods to take home as gifts (or whether you’re on a spoil-youself streak), there is a huge range of stunning homeware, kitchen items and wine to be bought.

L’Ormarins Brut Classique RosΓ©

We’ve actually been treated to a bottle of the L’Ormarins Brut Classique RosΓ© before, and it is the most delicious sparkling wine.Β  A Pinot Noir and Chardonnay blend, it is packed with notes of raspberries and strawberries, as well as light notes of brioche.Β  All wrapped up in a pretty salmon pink wine with vivacious bubbles.

We were then led into the most EXQUISITE room, the Anthonij Rupert Tasting Room with a long wooden table laid with glasses.Β  You can enjoy bespoke wine tastings of the Cape Of Good Hope wines, the L’Ormarins wines and other Anthonij Rupert Wyne ranges.Β  Five white wines and four reds were then poured out before us, and we were guided on a magical tasting of some truly extraordinary wines that Anthonij Rupert Wyne has to offer.

To me, the most memorable white wine was definitely the Riebeeksrivier Caroline 2018 – a blend of Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Roussanne and Marsanne, it’s just gorgeous! Notes of honey suckle and yellow stone fruit on the nose, while rich dried peaches, vanilla and sweet stone fruit on the palate.Β  Beautifully balanced with a very gentle acidity.Β  Definitely a wine I’d love to drink during a girls lunch with my mom!

Nick’s choice of the whites was most definitely the Altima Elandskloof Sauvignon Blanc 2020 (as I mentioned, he’s never been the biggest fan of white wines, but Sauvignon Blanc is leading the way for a big change).Β  I think it’s the lovely crisp green notes and the tropical fruit that get him.Β  This Sauvignon Blanc is light, with lots of green pepper and passionfruit on the nose, and a nice acidity and tropical fruit on the palate.

The Riebeeksrivier Chenin Blanc 2019 was also delicious, as I’m a fan of Chenin.Β  On the nose it’s all sweet mango and stone fruit, yet on the palate it’s a little richer, with lots of peach and apricots.

Another favourite of mine was the Serruria Elandskloof Chardonnay 2018, as I really feel myself gravitating towards this grape at the moment.Β  A wooded Chardonnay, it is stunning, with fresh notes of lime and lemon, with a little almond nuttiness on the nose, while on the palate you’ll find a richer citrus flavour.Β  Gorgeous.

One of the wines that wasn’t a favourite for either of us was the Laing Citrusdalberg Groendruif 2020.Β  Made purely from Semillon, I’ve only ever tasted this grape in a blend.Β  On it’s own I found it too floral for my liking.

Onto the reds we went, beginning with the Sneeuwkrans Elandskloof Pinot Noir 2018.Β  I love how Pinot Noir has that beautiful berry note on both nose and palate.Β  This wine was rich in cherries and blueberries on both, just juicy and delicious.

Both hubby and I love a good Syrah, so we really enjoyed the Riebeeksrivier Swartland Syrah 2015. Classic plum and dark berry fruit, with that subtle peppery spice, this is a wine that’s not to be missed.

Another lovely wine was the red blend, Riebeeksrivier Southern Slopes 2017.Β  Β  A blend of Shiraz, Mouvedre and Durif, it’s actually quite a savoury wine on the nose, with notes of biltong and spice.Β  On the palate, however, it’s juicy and bright, with raspberry and plum.

Our favourite of the reds though, had to be the Basson Swartland Pinotage 2017 – as we both LOVE our Pinotage.Β  Rich and bold, with ripe red berries and blueberries.Β  Juicy and vibrant, it’s an absolutely stunning Pinotage that you really must try if you’re a fan of the varietal.
