Last night, we had the pleasure of attending the exciting launch of Krispy Kreme in KwaZulu Natal. The international doughnut brand has been going since the 1930’s in America, and opened it’s first South African doors in Rosebank, Johannesburg at the end of 2015. Now, us doughnut-starved folks in Durban can finally get their hands on some of these super tasty treats, without having to plan a trip to Jozi first! The store in Gateway shopping mall in Umhlanga opens up tomorrow 15 March 2017.
Krispy Kreme are famous for their incredible yeast-raised doughnuts (making them exceptionally soft and light), their hot coffees and their frozen chillers. But for me, I was all about that doughnut life when I entered their launch – I’m obsessed!
Catering for the ‘real’ food (although to me, doughnuts have their own food group anyway), Fudart Streatery was serving up delicious gourmet burgers and mocktails. There was a chicken and a beef option, but to be honest, the second I finished reading half of the description for the beef one, nothing else mattered.
We placed an order for a drink each (I grabbed a Cucumber, Lemon and Mint fizz mocktail, while the fiance ordered a Strawberry and Mint fizz mocktail), and both went straight for the beef burgers – Moroccan-spiced, and served with feta, hummus, mayonnaise, micro-greens and balsamic onion marmalade. My other half (who is difficult to please in the burger-stakes) claimed it was one of the best burgers he’d ever had. Not something I hear often from him! Krispy Kreme even outdid themselves with their outside catering!
There was also a dj playing some great music, and some live entertainment as well. Such a party!
After a couple of speeches, and a few super delicious Original Glazed doughnuts handed out individually-wrapped from trays that were circulating the crowd, we were allowed in a few at a time, to see the new store and we were allowed to choose 12 doughnuts from the decadent selection they had on offer. On top of this, we were given another 12 Original Glazed, all 24 to take home with us and share – Krispy Kreme are all about sharing and spreading the joy, so to be able to take home a delicious double dozen doughnuts was fabulous!

As you can see, the staff are all so bubbly and friendly – so lovely to see! The joy in the brand and what it stands for was palpable.
We were quite overwhelmed at what flavours to go for, and ended up choosing 2 x New York Cheesecake (a favourite from when we tasted Krispy Kreme for the first time in Joburg), 2 x Powdered Strawberry, 2 x Cinnamon, 2 x Caramel Crunch (we can’t find this on the site, but it was filled with caramel, and topped with chocolate, 2 x Milk Tart and 2 x Cookies and Kreme.
Today we took all of the doughnuts into work, to share with our coworkers, and boy were the excited – not only to be tasting Krispy Kreme for the first time, but because they were getting to taste before the store even opened!
We cut all the flavours into smaller bites, so everyone could taste each flavour. The general consensus was that Original Glazed and New York Cheesecake were the definite favourites!
